Stitch Settings

Once you have wound the bobbin and threaded the Singer 500a. Turn the light by twisting the back knob under the arm.
This area controls the spacing between stitches. Fine area is very small and 6 is very big. Turn the brown knob and move the lever up or down to the space you desire.
Push the gold dial to move it and pull the brown one to move it. Different letter, stitch spacing and needle slanting will get you different stitch patterns on the Singer 500 a Side Slanting Rocketeer. The settings to the right of the letters control the amount and direction of the needle slant. Hence the name side slanting.

Here are settings AK through AR done with a 15 stitch spacing and a neutral needle. (not slanted either way) AL seemed to create the best zigzag and AK created the straightest stitch.
Here are a few C stitches done with a neutral needle in 15 stitch spacing. CQ made a nice wave pattern. CM made a more bumpy wave pattern.
Here are some E combination stitches done with a neutral needle and a 10 stitch spacing.  They all seemed pretty similar to me.
Here are the G combination settings, done in a neutral needle with a 10 stitch spacing. GM an GK puckered the cloth a little bit. GM had a little bit of zigzagging along with the puckering. GO is the biggest zigzag out of all the letter combinations.
These are the I combination stitches, done with a neutral needle in the 6 stitch spacing. They were all pretty straight and caused puckering and bunching.
